Bipolar disorder (BD) is a serious mental that globally affected 40 million people in 2019. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), present state of scientific knowledge only permits psychiatrists diagnose BD using subjective and imprecise questionnaires. Therefore, developing diagnostic tool with objective precise biomarkers should be major focus research this field. Among potential for BD, electroencephalogram (EEG)-based signatures are considered most optimal marker due their strong links behavioural symptoms also non-invasiveness. The goal review give detailed summary current techniques investigating traces through EEG abnormalities. In review, 13 studies from databases such as ScienceDirect PubMed seeking utilize characteristics were selected. search keywords “EEG diagnosis”, microstates BD”, features patients”. publication date was set 2007 2021. From these studies, we synthesize effects each feature, well detail pros cons when feature biomarker BD. Results showed demonstrate among seven properties discussed article, shown by several studies. By definition, dynamic representation spatial distribution scalp's electric it varies over time. Specifically, four microstate classes recorded different brain regions classified into A (right-frontal left-posterior), B (left-frontal right-posterior), C (midline frontal-occipital), D frontal topographies). Greater presence class patients during task-free resting states distinctive characteristic which can differentiated other psychiatric illnesses. Besides microstates, have bright future diagnosis. frequency bands, researchers discovered exhibit abnormal delta alpha signals compared healthy controls (HCs). abnormalities would promising detecting addition, anomalies possible indicators.
